July 1, 2005 - July 10, 2005

To all who participated and/or supported the Mexico Mission Hello, Hola, and Kuira!

The Young Adults and fellow missionaries are back from the mountains of Chihuahua, and the mission was a resounding success. We were able to deliver school supplies and a check for $4,350.00 to Sister Elvira and Sister Mercedes, which exceeded our goal of $4,000.00. This was accomplished through the generosity of everyone who either bought a purse or made a donation. Of course, a final contribution of $800.00 by The Sacred Heart Social Concerns Ministry pushed us over the top.

Many tears of gratitude were shed by the Sisters by this outpouring of support from people far away. As a bonus, we learned that parts of the roof that are being replaced will be donated to the local Tarahumara's for roofs on their homes. Most of their homes have wood planks covered by tar paper. We also found out that the roof that is being replaced is over 90 years old. By freeing up funds used for repairs, the Sister's are able to purchase more food items and basic necessities, such as blankets for the Tarahumara families for the upcoming winter.

One of the highlights of the trip was passing out bags of food to the Tarahumara families. One of the most touching moments was after passing out cookies to the children, many wanted to share their cookies with us. It is hard to imagine, living in a country where water is taken for granted, how precious it is where water is scarce. As we traveled further into the mountains, cleanliness and personal hygiene worsened considerably. Many Tarahumara's travel long distances on foot and by donkey to fill up water containers to bring back for their families. Every drop is precious. Upon our return we have reflected on our mission and look ahead to the next mission.

We are meeting to discuss our goals for the next mission trip. We will keep everyone posted on the outcome and invite you to keep checking the website for updates.
